Introducing Carin

We would like to introduce Dr Carin Black, who is joining the @womens_OGS on-call roster.

Carin is a respected colleague who has covered the WOGS obstetricians in the past and is planning to join us full time mid 2023.

Let’s get to know Carin a little better!

After growing up in Melbourne, Carin obtained her Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery Degree (MBBS) through the University of Adelaide. She returned to Melbourne after her undergraduate degree and discovered her passion for Obstetrics whilst working a rotation in Women’s Health. This led to her undertaking Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist training through the Royal Women’s Hospital and obtaining her FRANZCOG qualification in 2014, which included a year of accredited training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM). Carin completed a Research Higher Degree in 2019 through the University of Melbourne, focusing on the pregnancy-related condition, pre-eclampsia. She has published numerous scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals in this area.

Since qualifying as an Obstetrician in 2014, Carin has maintained regular employment in specialty clinics in major tertiary hospitals, and through this work has developed a strong appreciation for the importance of holistic, patient-centred multi-disciplinary care for complex pregnancies. She holds a public appointment at the Royal Women’s Hospital and currently works in both the Maternal Medicine and Recurrent Miscarriage Clinics. She also maintains regular exposure to tertiary labour ward management through the Royal Women’s Hospital.

Carin enjoys being engaged in teaching at all levels, from medical students to advanced specialist trainees, and holds an honorary position as a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the University of Melbourne Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Carin has an appreciation and passion for quality and safety within the healthcare system, and has recently been awarded a Clinical Improvement Fellowship through Safer Care Victoria and the Royal Women’s Hospital, which will allow continuing involvement in this important and contemporary area of healthcare.

With two young children of her own, time outside work is mainly spent with family and friends, but in her precious spare time, Carin enjoys reading, cooking, camping and any form of travel.

You may meet Carin during an antenatal visit, out of hours in the labour ward or speak to her on our ‘on call service’ (this is our out-of-hours on call service) as she transitions to becoming part of the WOGS team.

Welcome, Carin – we’re excited to have you on board!
